Entry Requirements

Academic criteria: i) First degree, minimum 2nd class honours or equivalent. Exceptionally other relevant qualifications and experience (including those without a first degree) can be considered (see below for further details). ii) Applicants who have already studied at a level equivalent to a UK master’s course will be assessed primarily on the basis of achievement at this level and would generally be expected to demonstrate a clear pass (55 or above). iii) IELTS 6.5 or equivalent is required for applicants whose first language is not English. This criterion can be waived only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate can demonstrate fluency in written and spoken English by other means. iv) Applicants will be expected to be healthcare or social care practitioner with a specialism relevant to the programme. Please complete the personal statement and supporting information section of the application form to include relevant evidence in the areas below. This is particularly important for those students who do not meet the normal entry criteria: Community activities – Candidates should demonstrate commitment to new endeavours and the motivation to allocate time for them. This is particularly relevant for part-time candidates. Scholastic activities – Candidates should demonstrate they have maintained an intellectual interest in health or social care. Wider scholastic activity and interest may be considered to assess aptitude and attainment equivalent to a first degree. Examples would include academic publication, preparation of substantive reports for employers or excellent attainment on standalone courses at the equivalent level of a final year honours degree. Paid or voluntary work – Care experience relevant to people with dementia is very desirable. For example, nurses, residential and domiciliary care workers, managers and supervisors, doctors (including General Practitioner’s) social workers, healthcare assistants and other nursing assistants/auxiliaries, assistant practitioners, and auxiliary health professionals such as psychologists, occupational therapists, speech & language therapists and physiotherapists. Work shadowing/ observation – In the absence of specific care experience relevant to people with dementia, high calibre applicants may be considered if they can demonstrate some commitment to experiencing an environment where dementia care is the primary aim.
