Masters Degree Description

This course is particularly suitable if you are interested in language learning and teaching. You may already have tried teaching languages, or would like to pursue a career in teaching. We explore key issues in English language teaching from multiple perspectives, including:

  • Second language acquisition
  • Motivation and group dynamics
  • Psycholinguistics
  • Discourse analysis
  • Corpus linguistics
  • Intercultural communication

Entry Requirements

2:1 (or international equivalent) in English language/literature or a related arts or humanities subject

Module Details

Core modules

During the autumn term, you will take the following 20-credit core modules:

  • Quantitative and Qualitative Research Methods in Applied Linguistics
  • Second Language Acquisition

Optional modules

You choose either three or four 20-credit optional modules from the below list:

  • English Vocabulary: Teaching and Learning
  • Group Dynamics and Motivation in the Language Classroom
  • Intercultural Communication20 credits
  • Language Teaching: Speaking and Listening
  • Psychology of Language

If you only chose three modules listed above, you can then choose an additional module from the following:

  • Business and Organisational Communication20 credits
  • Consciousness in Fiction
  • Language, Gender and Sexuality
  • Research Methods: Corpus Linguistics
  • Sociolinguistics of Work20 credits
  • The Teaching of Language and Literature

If you only chose three modules, you can then choose an additional module from the list below:

  • Cognition and Literature
  • Consciousness in Fiction
  • Dramatic Discourse
  • Language, Gender and Sexuality
