Masters Degree Description

Our PGCE English with SEND (special educational needs and disabilities) pathway is an exciting opportunity to gain a SEND specialisation to your PGCE English qualification.

This course is for PGCE English trainees with a passion for special needs teaching.

Alongside the core PGCE English content, our SEND training course will help you learn how to craft engaging session for children with SENDs. You'll dive into practical, hands-on SEND sessions and learn how to work with, support, and teach a variety of pupils with a myriad of additional special needs. 

You'll also gain an insight into how to adapt your teaching when the traditional English national curriculum is not appropriate for their needs.

We'll equip you with the skills and knowledge to guide students individually, assessing their needs and their abilities accordingly. You'll also explore the different types of teaching and job pathways available to you as a teacher of English and SEND. 

On this course you'll have the chance to teach in a Special School for your Focus Placement. This will last for a half-term.  

In addition, when in your base placement mainstream school, you'll teach students with a variety of special educational needs to gain a wealth of classroom experience. 

To be eligible, all you'll need in addition to the standard requirements for the PGCE English programme, is an interest in teaching children with a special educational needs and/or disabilities – and a passion for making a real difference to their lives. 

Entry Requirements

You’ll need: 

  • a 2:2 degree (UK honours degree or equivalent) in English or a related subject
  • GCSEs (minimum grade 4/C) in English language and maths 

If you don't have the required GCSEs we'll ask you at the offer stage to take equivalency tests. You'll need to cover the cost of the tests yourself.
