Masters Degree Description

Choose Kingston’s Film Studies MA

The Film Studies MA provides an exciting intellectual challenge in the way it focuses on what continues to be arguably the most significant and popular modern mass media. It approaches the medium in an original cross-disciplinary fashion. The course draws insights from diverse disciplines as history, sociology, art history, comparative studies and aesthetics and from major intellectual perspectives as feminism, postmodernism, postcolonial theory, semiotics and psychoanalysis.

The Film Studies MA is jointly run, and in parts co-taught, by the fields of film studies and media studies, a collaboration which ensures that you enjoy the opportunity to engage with two vibrant areas of academic fields. The course builds upon the specialist expertise and wide-ranging experience of colleagues from within the two fields. It is informed by staff research into a wide variety of areas, including gender and sexuality on screen, religion, philosophy and film, censorship and ideology, industry and independents in New Hollywood, as well as cinema and media in the global context.

The programme is concerned with all that is new, vital and innovative in contemporary cinema, and focuses on a wide range of theoretical approaches to films, providing an in-depth study of selected areas of contemporary American, European and World cinema.

Our aim is to provide a supportive, stimulating and challenging course, which promotes a holistic, synoptic approach to film to encourage self-reliance, self-confidence and independence.

What will you study?
