Masters Degree Description

Innovation Management is a two-year full time international MSc specialization programme for Degree Students. The programme leads to a Master Degree in Economics and Business Administration with specialization in Innovation Management. Innovation Management enrolls both Danish and international students.

Innovation Management is a two-year double-degree master programme taking place in China at GUCAS, Beijing. The programme is taught in English. The programme is organized under the Sino-Danish Centre for Education and Research. Both Aalborg University and GUCAS are responsible for this specialization.

Innovation Management gives you knowledge and skills in innovation at community and company level. As a graduate you will be able to plan and execute development projects in both private and public organizations.

Entry Requirements

A bachelor degree in Business Administration (three years) or the equivalent is required. Students with a bachelor degree in other fields plus relevant practical experience may also apply.

Foreign students are required to pass one of the English proficiency tests accepted by Aalborg University. These are IELTS, TOEFL and Cambridge ESOL.The test has to be less than two years old, otherwise it will not be accepted as valid. Danish students must have no less than a B-level in English.

You do not have to submit an English test if one of the following criteria applies to you: 

  • You have a complete bachelor degree done in English from either Australia, the UK, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, USA, New Zealand, South Africa or Canada.
  • You have a complete bachelor degree done in English from a Danish University.

Module Details

The 120-ECTS programme consists of carefully tailored modules, encompassing fields of research within innovation management, policy making, innovation systems, creativity, organization, methodology, learning, globalization, business models along with project work and the Master’s Thesis. The pedagogy in the education is founded on problem-based learning, i.e. the students identify, process and solve problems themselves. This also includes active involvement in lectures and assignments provided by professors. The topics in the modules are as follows:

1st semester

  • Contemporary Theory of Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship (5 ECTS)
  • Social Context and Dynamics in a China/EU Perspective (5 ECTS)
  • Theories of the Organisation and Management of Economic Activity (5 ECTS)
  • Methodology (5 ECTS)
  • Innovation Seminar and/or Project Work (10 ECTS)

2nd semester

  • Learning, Knowledge and R&D-Management (5 ECTS)
  • Globalisation and Innovation (5 ECTS)
  • Innovation Systems and Entrepreneurship (5 ECTS)
  • Business Models and Strategic Planning (5 ECTS)
  • Innovation Seminar and/or Project Work (10 ECTS)

3rd semester

  • Internship in company, institution or organisation, concluded with written project. The project may take place in China, Denmark or another country (30 ECTS)

4th semester

  • Master’s Thesis, theoretical or theoretical-practical (30 ECTS)

The first two semesters consists of modules that provide an understanding of innovation and related disciplines in a broad context, both on a macro and micro level. As these capabilities have been obtained, the third semester provides the opportunity for the student to have an internship in an international corporation, where the obtained knowledge can be applied. This is the perfect setting for translation theoretical knowledge into practical actions. The fourth semester encompasses the Master’s Thesis, and can also involve a company collaboration. During project work throughout the education, the students will receive professional supervision from researchers and business practitioners, in order to generate knowledge on the highest possible level, both in terms of business and academia.
