Masters Degree Description

This course provides postgraduate training for doctors specialising in orthopaedics and is delivered with support from consultant orthopaedic surgeons.

The course enables you to:

  • further develop an understanding of the principles and clinical concepts underpinning contemporary orthopaedic surgery
  • further develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to perform evidence-based practice and research within the specialist field of trauma and orthopaedics
  • foster a commitment to lifelong learning and an inquisitive approach to clinical practice that will enable you to acquire skills and enhance your practice

The programme is available through either a part-time (two-year) or a full-time (one-year) route. The programme structure is dependent on the programme route.

Entry Requirements

Admission criteria:

part-time route

  • medical degree (MBBS and MRCS or equivalent postgraduate degree such as MS or DNB)
  • working within orthopaedics speciality at or above F2/SHO/ST3 or equivalent
  • GMC registration
  • international/overseas applicants must have been offered employment in the UK through the Medical Training Initiative and have IELTS 7 or above before applying
  • admission will be dependent on successful interview.

  • recent work experience within orthopaedics speciality
  • international/overseas applicants must have IELTS 7 or above

Student Destinations

Full time students have the opportunity to undertake an optional observational experience within a clinical setting. A clinical advisor devises an individualised plan for each student, which is detailed in a learning contract. Observational opportunities are spread across the course and include a range of relevant activities. They may take place at any of the local NHS trust sites and you are expected to cover any associated costs yourself.

The course supports your career development by enhancing the research, evidence-based practice skills and principles underpinning specialist clinical practice that are required within the specialist field of trauma and orthopaedics. It provides an additional masters level qualification that may be used to support career progression. Engaging in research and a record of publication are important aspects in career progression if you are aiming to achieve a consultant position. Providing an opportunity to develop your research skills and to support you in preparing your work for publication is an important element of the course.
