Masters Degree Description

This course provides training for general primary teachers, focusing on the 5-11 age range. It aims to develop your subject knowledge in English, mathematics and science and how these are taught across the 5-11 age range.

It also allows for the development of your experience, understanding and teaching of the foundation subjects at Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 and the progression that is involved. You will gain a balance of school and university based periods of training throughout the year.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should have at least an upper second class honours degree.
Substantial classroom based work experience (at least 150 hours in the previous 12 months) in a UK Primary school must have been completed prior to you making your application. Other experience of working with children will be taken into consideration as long as it is in addition to classroom experience in a UK Primary school. One of the two Referees on your UTT form must be from a school-based setting which confirms the time you have spent in the classroom and comments on the contribution you have made.

Applicants must have passed the Professional Skills tests in Literacy and Numeracy before starting the course.

Satisfactory health and enhanced criminal history checks will be required by all applicants prior to acceptance on the course.
The DBS in the UK is currently not able to conduct overseas criminal record checks. International applicants, those without British Citizenship and British Citizens with a significant period of overseas residency therefore require a criminal records check or certificate of good conduct from their home/overseas country prior to entry on to the course. A UK DBS check will be required after enrolment.

English Language Requirement: IELTS 6.5 with no skills below 6.5, or an equivalent qualification. The University provides excellent support for any applicant who may be required to undertake additional English language courses.

Module Details

The aim of this module is to enable students to critically evaluate and reflect on their own professional practice and develop their professional values, knowledge and skills in the classroom.

You will gain a thorough understanding of each subject area in order to prepare you to teach in a Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2 setting.

This module is designed to strengthen your knowledge of the key concepts and pedagogy of English, mathematics and science as well as empower you to effectively teach this subject to Key Stage 1 and 2 pupils. This module will also include teaching in ICT to improve your knowledge and your overall digital literacy.

This module is in direct response to the Government’s vision to produce specialist teachers for the future. The module currently uses English, maths, science, physical education and modern foreign languages (MFL) as examples of how to adapt specialist knowledge to lead a specialist subject in the future. You will also be able to choose your subject specialist area.

Teaching placements will enable you to further develop your planning, teaching and classroom management skills in Key Stage 1 and 2. You will also be expected to demonstrate competence in the planning, teaching, assessing and recording of pupils – learning in each of these Key Stages.
